In 1770, King Charles III founded the Royal Menagerie in Retiro Park. It is the second oldest zoo in the world.
In 1972, the animals of Zoo Madrid were relocated to new modern facilities and natural habitats at the large park Casa de Campo.

Giant Pandas in Madrid

Zoo Madrid has 4 giant pandas:
Bing Xing, Hua Zuiba, Po & De De
Bing Xing & Hua Zuiba came to Madrid on September 8, 2007 as a goodwill gesture by the Chinese government to the Spanish King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia to China. Twins Po & De De were born on September 7, 2010.

Shao Shao (female) lived at Zoo Madrid from December 24, 1978 until October 23, 1983.
Chang Chang (male) lived at Zoo Madrid from December 24, 1978 until October 13, 1995.
Chu Lin (male) lived at Zoo Madrid from September 4, 1982 until April 29, 1996.
