Ueno Zoological Gardens is the oldest zoo in Japan. Founded in 1882, it has been the flagship of the Japanese zoo world. Giant Pandas in Tokyo
Ueno Zoo has 2 giant pandas: Ri Ri & Shin Shin
Tokyo's Governor Shintaro Ishihara announced on February 12, 2010 that the Chinese side has agreed to lease a breeding pair of pandas. Ri Ri & Shin Shin arrived on February 21, 2011. [read more]
Panda Exhibit
Ueno Zoo is renovating it's Panda House.
Tokyo's Giant Panda House was opened to the public in 1972. Adaptations to the exhibit were made in the eighties, when bars were replaced by glass windows. Ueno's Panda House contains one large outdoor and four indoor display area's. [read more]
