Giant Pandas in Taipei

Taipei Zoo has 2 giant pandas: Tuan Tuan & Yuan Yuan

A giant panda gift for Taiwan

On May 3, 2005, the Central Government of China announced that the mainland would present two giant pandas to Taiwan. Two giant pandas were selected on January 28, 2006 and they moved into a seperate enclosure in Wolong, waiting for Taiwan to accept the gift from the People’s Republic of China.

On May 12, 2008 the great earthquake destroyed Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan’s enclosure at Wolong. Both of them escaped from the ruined enclosure but were found back later that week.

On March 23, 2008, the new President of Taiwan, Ma Yingjiu, accepted the gift.

On June 18, 2008, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan were moved to the Ya’an Bifengxia Base.

On December 23, 2008 the couple of giant pandas arrived at Taipei Zoo, Taiwan. The giant pandas will live at Taipei Zoo’s Xinguang Special Exhibit House. Tuan Tuan & Yuan Yuan are a gift from the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of China (Taiwan), to improve the relationship between the two countries.
