National Zoo

The 163-acre Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Rock Creek Park was established by an Act of Congress in 1889 "for advancement of science and the instruction and recreation of the people." It is a world leader in exhibition, conservation, zoological research, and education.

Giant Pandas in D.C.

National Zoo has 2 giant pandas:
Mei Xiang & Tian Tian
They arrived in Washington D.C. on December 6, 2000 under an agreement with China. Both giant pandas are on a 10-year loan to the National Zoo.

Panda History

Hsing Hsing (male) & Ling Ling (female) arrived on April 16, 1972. They had 5 cubs, but none of them survived. She died on December 30, 1992. He died on November 28, 1999.
Chia Chia was loaned from London Zoo from March 6 until July 10, 1981.
Tai Shan was born on July 9, 2005 at the National Zoo. He left his birth town on February 4, 2010 and moved to China.
