Assiniboine Park Zoo, Winnipeg, Canada was a Giant Panda Zoo in 1989.

About Assiniboine Park Zoo
In 1904 the City of Winnipeg, the Parks Board purchased a number of native animals, deer, bison, and elk.
Assiniboine Park Zoo became the official name of the facility in 1959.

History of Giant Pandas in Winnipeg
Assiniboine Park Zoo had 2 giant pandas: Cheng Cheng & Bing Bing

In 1989 a couple of giant pandas came to Winnipeg. Cheng Cheng and Bing Bing (Rong Rong) came from Chengdu and lived at the Assiniboine Park Zoo from May 1 until September 17, 1989.
The Panda Project was a huge undertaking for the Zoological Society of Manitoba and was very successful.

After the pandas return to Chengdu, the zoo placed spectacled bears in the new facility where they remained for over ten years.

Cheng Cheng
Cheng Cheng (female) was born on September 24, 1985 at the Chengdu Zoo.
She has studbook number 297.
Her mother is Mei Mei (152) and her father is Qiang Qiang (174).
She was loaned to three Japanese Zoos (Okayama, Hakodate & Adventure World Wakayama) in 1988 with her sister Qing Qing.
Cheng Cheng lives now at the Chengdu Zoo. She gave birth to 8 cubs. The most famous are Cheng Ji & Cheng Gong, and Hua Zui Ba (Zoo Madrid’s panda mother).

Bing Bing
Bing Bing (female) was born on August 6, 1986 at the Chengdu Zoo.
She has studbook number 314.
Her mother is Guo Guo and her father is No.9 Pang.
Bing Bing lives now at the Anji Bamboo and Giant Panda Research Center, Hangzhou, Zhejiang. She gave birth to 14 cubs. The most famous are Lun Lun (Zoo Atlanta’s panda mother) and Bing Xing (Zoo Madrid’s panda father). Her last cub, Xiang Bing was born in 2007.

After their trip to Canada, Cheng Cheng & Bing Bing lived for 3 months at the Yuki Park Zoo, Kofu City, Japan.
