Zoo Madrid
In 1770, King Charles III founded the Royal Menagerie in Retiro Park.
It is the second oldest zoo in the world.
In 1972, the animals of Zoo Madrid were relocated to new modern facilities and natural habitats at the large park Casa de Campo.
In Zoo Madrid you can find animals from the five continents, a large Aquarium, an Aviary and a Dolfinarium.
The Zoo is owned by Parques Reunidos.
Giant Pandas in Madrid

Return of the giant panda
On September 8, 2007 a new couple of giant pandas, Bing Xing & Hua Zuiba, arrived in Spain. The pandas will live in Madrid for 10 years as a part of an International Conservation Cooperation Project between China and Spain. The joint project was a goodwill gesture promised by the Chinese government during a visit by the Spanish King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia to China in June 2007.
On September 19, 2007 Queen Doña Sofía opened the remodified giant panda exhibit of Zoo Madrid.
Bing Xing
Bing Xing (male) was born on September 1, 2000 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
He has studbook number 519.
His name means “Star of Ice” in Chinese.
His mother is Bing Bing (314) and his father is Ha Lan (287).
He was loaned to Hangzhou Wild Animal World on January 9, 2002. He moved to the Chengdu Zoo on February 12, 2004. He returned to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on October 9, 2005.
He came to Zoo Madrid on September 8, 2007 with Hua Zuiba.
Hua Zuiba
Hua Zuiba (female) was born on September 16, 2003 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
She has studbook number 576.
Her name means “Beauty Mouth” in Chinese.
Her mother is Cheng Cheng (297) and her father is Ping Ping (377).
She came to Zoo Madrid on September 8, 2007 with Bing Xing.

Juan Carlos receives a gift from China
On December 24, 1978 King Juan Carlos received a goodwill gift from the chinese government, a couple of giant pandas: Shao Shao & Chang Chang.
Shao Shao
Shao Shao (female) was born on September 18, 1975 at the Beijing Zoo.
She has studbook number 169.
Her mother is Yuan Yuan (131) and her father is Du Du (54).
She came to the Zoo de la Casa de Campo on December 24, 1978 with Chang Chang.
Shao Shao is the mother of Chu Lin and his twin sister
Shao Shao died on October 23, 1983.
Chang Chang
Chang Chang (male) was born approximately in 1973.
He has studbook number 187.
Chang Chang was found in Wenxian on December 2, 1976.
He moved to Beijing Zoo on October 6, 1978.
He came to the Zoo de la Casa de Campo on December 24, 1978 with Shao Shao.
Chang Chang died on October 13, 1995.
Chu Lin
Chu Lin (male) was born on September 4, 1982 at the Zoo de la Casa de Campo, Madrid, Spain.
He has studbook number 249.
His mother is Shao Shao (169) and his father is Chia Chia (141).
He was the first giant panda born in Europe.
He was the most valuable zooanimal ever.
Chu Lin died on April 29, 1996.
