Giant Panda Zoo 1957-2001

 

 

 

Moscow Zoo

 

Moscow Zoo (Ìîñêîâñêèé çîîïàðê) was founded in 1864 by three professor-biologists from the Moscow State University. The zoo was nationalized in 1919. The city of Moscow gained the ownership of the zoo in 1922.

 

 

 

 

   

History of Giant Pandas in Moscow

 

Moscow Zoo had 5 giant pandas: Ping Ping, An An, Chi Chi, Wen Wen & Yuan Yuan

 

 

 

 

Ping Ping

 

Ping Ping (male) was born approximately in September 1954.

 

He has studbook number 17.

 

He was captured in Baoxing on March 2, 1955 and moved to the Beijing Zoo on June 4, 1955.

 

He came to the Moscow Zoo, Moscow, U.S.S.R. on May 18, 1957.

He moved to Moscow as a goodwill gift from China.

 

Ping Ping died on May 29, 1961.

 

 

 

An An

 

An An (male) was born approximately in 1955.

 

He has studbook number 24.

 

He was captured in Baoxing on April 2, 1958 and moved to the Beijing Zoo on June 2, 1958.

 

He came to the Moscow Zoo, Moscow, U.S.S.R. on August 18, 1959.

He moved to Moscow as a goodwill gift from China.

 

He went on a mating trip to Chi Chi in London from August 30, 1968 until May 21, 1969, but without succes.

 

An An died on October 18, 1972.

 

 

 

Chi Chi

 

Chi Chi (female) was born approximately in September 1954.

 

She has studbook number 18.

Her name means "Naughty, Mischievous Little Girl" in Chinese.

 

She was caught in Baoxing in the Sichuan mountains on May 5, 1955. She was only a few months old. She lived at the Beijing Zoo from June 4, 1955.

 

In 1958, Austrian animal dealer Heini Demmer, bought her from the Beijing Zoo. He toured with Chi Chi along several zoos in Europe: Zoo Frankfurt, Zoo Kobenhavn, Tierpark Berlin & London Zoo.

 

Heini Demmer sold her to London Zoo on September 30, 1958.

 

She went on a mating trip to An An in Moscow from March 11 until October 17, 1966, but without succes.

 

Chi Chi died on July 22, 1972 at London Zoo.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Short term loan - Wen Wen & Yuan Yuan

 

Wen Wen (female) was born on August 30, 1982 at the Beijing Zoo.

 

She has studbook number 247.

 

Her mother is Dai Dai (148) and her father is Lo Lo (186).

 

In April 1992 she was loaned to the Xian Zoo. In 1996 she was loaned to the Jiaozuo Zoo & Shijiahzu. From May 23, 1997 until May 12, 2001 she was loaned to the Dalian Forest Zoo.

 

She was loaned to the Moscow Zoo from June 13 until August 6, 2001 with Yuan Yuan.

 

When she returned to China, the Beijing Zoo loaned her again to the Dalian Forest Zoo. Wen Wen lives in Dalian since September 5, 2001.

 

 

Yuan Yuan (male) was born on August 23, 1999

 

He has studbook number 488.

 

His mother is Yun Yun (245) and his father is Liang Liang (323).

 

He was loaned to the Moscow Zoo from June 13 until August 6, 2001 with Wen Wen.

 

On October 20, 2004 he was loaned to the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda in Wolong.

 

Yuan Yuan lives at the Ya'an Bifengxia Base since July 26, 2007.
