Chapultepec Zoo

 

On July 6, 1923, by initiative of the misionary and pioneer of Mexican Biology, Alfonso L. Herrera, the first stone of the Chapultepec Zoo was placed. The zoo receives more than 5,5 million visitors a year and is home to more than 2050 animals of 250 different species. Their objectives are those to foment education activities and investigation to cause that the animals of the collections stay healthy and reproduce, and with it its conservation is obtained, offering to the visitors recreation, relaxation and a culture of protection to Zoological silvestres. The fauna and the flora has become a modern resource to protect the biodiversity, and has stopped being only recreational centers, is in fact, the only possibility of survival of some species, as well as authentic genetical banks.

 

 

 

 

 

Giant Pandas in Mexico City

 

Chapultepec Zoo has 3 giant pandas: Xiu Hua, Shuan Shuan & Xin Xin

 

 

 

 

 

Xiu Hua

 

Xiu Hua (female) was born on June 25, 1985 at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

She has studbook number 291.

Her name means "Flower Lion Tooth" in Chinese.

 

Her mother is Ying Ying (165) and her father is Pe Pe (167).

She is the fourth cub to be born at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

From August 1 until September 6, 1987 she was on loan to the Memphis Zoo.

 

 

 

 

Shuan Shuan

 

Shuan Shuan (female) was born on June 15, 1987 at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

She has studbook number 332.

Her name means "Double Double" in Chinese.

 

Her mother is Ying Ying (165) and her father is Pe Pe (167).

She is the seventh cub to be born at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

She went on a breeding loan to Ling Ling at the Ueno Zoo, Tokyo, Japan from December 3, 2003 until September 26, 2005.

 

 

 

 

Xin Xin

 

Xin Xin (female) was born on July 1, 1990 at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

She has studbook number 360.

Her name means "Hope" in Chinese.

 

Her mother is Tohui (234) and her father is Chia Chia (141).

She is the eighth cub to be born at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

 

 

 

 

History of Giant Pandas in Mexico City

 

Goodwill gift from China - Pe Pe & Ying Ying

 

Pe Pe (male) was born approximately in September 1974.

 

He has studbook number 167.

His name means "Treasure" in Chinese.

 

He was captured in Yuexi on July 28, 1975. He moved to the Beijing Zoo on August 14, 1975.

 

He came to the Chapultepec Zoo on September 10, 1975 with Ying Ying.

They were a goodwill gift from the Chinese government when vice-premier Chen Yuachi visited Mexico.

 

Pe Pe is the father of Xen Li, Tohui, Liang Liang, Xiu Hua, Xiu Hua's twin brother, Ping Ping & Shuan Shuan.

 

Pe Pe died on July 20, 1988.

 

 

Ying Ying (female) was born approximately in September 1974.

 

She has studbook number 165.

Her name means "Welcome" in Chinese.

 

She was captured in Baoxing on June 7, 1975. She moved to the Beijing Zoo on August 14, 1975.

 

She came to the Chapultepec Zoo on September 10, 1975 with Pe Pe.

They were a goodwill gift from the Chinese government when vice-premier Chen Yuachi visited Mexico.

 

Ying Ying is the mother of Xen Li, Tohui, Liang Liang, Xiu Hua, Xiu Hua's twin brother, Ping Ping & Shuan Shuan.

 

Ying Ying died on January 29, 1989.

 

 

 

 

Xen Li

 

Xen Li (female) was born on August 10, 1980 at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

She has studbook number 223.

Her name means "Victory" in Chinese.

 

Her mother is Ying Ying (165) and her father is Pe Pe (167).

She is the first cub to be born at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

Sadly, the cub died after only 8 days, when she was crushed by her mother on August 18, 1980.

 

 

 

Tohui

 

Tohui (female) was born on July 21, 1981 at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

She has studbook number 234.

Her name means "Boy" in Tarahumara, an Uto-Aztec language from North Mexico.

 

Her mother is Ying Ying (165) and her father is Pe Pe (167).

She is the second cub to be born at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

She was the first giant panda born outside of China who survived and also the first giant panda born outside of China to reproduce.

 

Tohui is the mother of Xin Xin.

 

Tohui died on November 16, 1993.

 

 

 

Liang Liang

 

Liang Liang (male) was born on June 22, 1983 at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

He has studbook number 256.

His name means "Brightness" in Chinese.

 

His mother is Ying Ying (165) and his father is Pe Pe (167).

He is the third cub to be born at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

Liang Liang died on May 23, 1999.

  

 

 

 

Xiu Hua 's twin brother

 

He was born on June 25, 1985 at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

He has studbook number 292.

 

His mother is Ying Ying (165) and his father is Pe Pe (167).

He is the fifth cub to be born at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

He died on June 27, 1985.

 

 

 

Ping Ping

 

Ping Ping (male) was born on June 15, 1987 at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

He has studbook number 331.

 

His mother is Ying Ying (165) and his father is Pe Pe (167).

He is the sixth cub to be born at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

He died on June 18, 1987.

 

 

 

Chia Chia

 

Chia Chia (male) was born approximately in September 1972.

 

He has studbook number 141.

His name means "Most Excellent or Very Best" in Chinese.

 

He was found in Baoxing on April 26, 1973 and moved to the Beijing Zoo on October 19, 1973.

 

He moved to London Zoo on September 14, 1974 with Ching Ching.

They were a goodwill gift from the Chinese Government to the prime minister of the United Kingdom, Edward Heath.

 

He was loaned to the National Zoo on March 6, 1981. Hsing Hsing showed no interest in mating with Ling Ling. Chia Chia's mate Ching Ching was ill and the zoo's were hoping Chia Chia would mate with Ling Ling. But it was no succes, Chia Chia & Ling Ling fought. He returned to London on July 10, 1981.

 

The Zoo de la Casa de Campo used his sperm to perform artificial insemination on Shao Shao in 1982.

 

After Ching Ching's death on June 20, 1985, Chia Chia stayed alone until September 2, 1988. He left London Zoo and moved to the Chapultepec Zoo to mate with their female panda Tohui. He arrived in Mexico on November 30, 1988, after a fundraising stop for the Chapultepec Zoo's panda breeding program at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

 

Chia Chia is the father of Chu Lin, Chu Lin's twin sister & Xin Xin.

 

Chia Chia died on October 13, 1991 at the Chapultepec Zoo.

 

 

 

 

Ling Ling

  

Ling Ling (male) was born on September 5, 1985 at the Beijing Zoo.

 

He has studbook number 294.

 

His mother is Dai Dai (148) and his father is Lo Lo (186).

 

He was loaned to the Baoding Zoo from March 7 until April 16, 1987.

 

Later that year, he went on a a trip to the U.S.A. with Yun Yun.

They arrived at the Bronx Zoo, New York, on April 18 and moved to Busch Gardens, Tampa on November 5, 1987. They returned to the Beijing Zoo in April 1988.

 

On November 5, 1992 he was traded for the Japanese born You You. The Ueno Zoo, Tokyo became Ling Ling's new home.

 

After his Japanese mate Tong Tong died, he made three breeding trips to the Chapultepec Zoo to mate with their three females. He stayed in Mexico from January 29, 2001 unitil April 24, 2001, from November 12, 2001 until April 24, 2002 and from January 27, 2003 until April 26, 2003.

 

Ling Ling died on April 30, 2008 at the Ueno Zoo from an hart-attack.
